Extended Life Vinyl For Making Labels

Bigger isn't always better!

When we think of making something tougher and stronger, we think about making it bigger.  But, durability (long life) depends on what causes failure.  For labels, thicker vinyl can be what causes failure.

What's going on?

Extended Life Vinyl
When vinyl labels or signs are used outside, the effect of moisture is a critical factor in label failure. The thicker the vinyl, the greater the surface area around the edges is, and that areas is exposed to weather.  Water will accumulate along the top of a label and dry out the adhesive.  This will result in adhesive failure, usually starting with the upper corners of the label.

A typical 3 mil vinyl will have a rated outdoor average life of five years. But 2.6 mil  DuraLabel Extended Life Vinyl Tapes, that have less of an edge surface area for moisture to collect on,  have a rated outdoor life of eight years.

Extended life vinyls also will have stronger adhesives. But a strong adhesive will still fail as a result of the moisture causing adhesive drying.  It is still important to have a low profile.

In addition to a longer outdoor life, extended life vinyl labels have other advantages.  For example, since extended life vinyl is thinner, it conforms to irregular surfaces.  It will more easily stay stuck on curved surfaces.  Vinyl tends to try to return to it's original shape, which is generally not the shape of the surface on which it is applied.  Thicker vinyl exerts a greater force as it attempts to get back to its original shape.
