Does that mean any continuous vinyl will work?
No, using "any" continuous vinyl is not a good idea. There are many factors that go into quality vinyl for labels. It begins with the manufacturing of the vinyl (and having the test lab - such as the DuraLabel Test Lab - to ensure vinyl quality is meeting specifications), but includes vinyl slitting, rolling, removal of static and various other factors. Having a quality vinyl manufacturing and testing process, from start to finish such as DuraLabel has, is critical.
What about thicker vinyls? Isn't "bigger" better?
And when it comes to vinyl thickness, "bigger" is not always better.
If you need flooring marking, then thicker vinyl is better. With floor marking tapes the biggest factor effecting life is abrasion. Thicker vinyl has greater abrasion resistance. For example, some DuraLabel floor marking tapes have a 34 mil thickness -- much greater than continuous vinyl for making safety labels and signs. But for labels and signs abrasion is not a major factor.
What most frequently causes safety label and sign failure is the adhesive drying out. The only place the adhesive is exposed to the atmosphere (and thus moisture, chemicals, and other materials that can dry out the adhesive) is on the edges of the label. The thicker the vinyl, the greater the area exposed for potential adhesive drying. What seems like a small increase, for 3.0 to 3.2 mil for example, results in a 7% increase in exposed area and a significant decrease in label life. Tests have shown that 3.0 mil is the optimum thickness.
If extra long label life is needed, then extended life vinyl is available. Extended life vinyl has a 2.0 mil thickness, providing an even smaller surface that is exposed for potential adhesive drying.
