Use Extra Large RTK Labels For Marking Pipes

Pipe Marker on a Cooling Water Pipe
It is becoming more common that pipers containing hazardous materials be marked with RTK labels.  There is a new blog post that mentioned using extra large size RTK labels on pipes.  The blog post didn't go into detail, but it seems like a good idea.

Standard size RTK labels are intended to be used on secondary containers. People are close enough to easily read these labels.  But pipes may be some distance away. Yet knowing the types of hazards the pipe contents have may be important, particularly for emergency responders.  When close-up access to a pipe is not possible, or maybe not desired during an emergency, using extra large RTK labels is a way to communicate hazard information from a distance.

DuraLabel is the only source for extra large RTK labels, and they are a good source. DuraLabel not only makes quality labeling products, their customer service is incredibly good. Plus you can get everything you need for pipe marking, and other types of labeling, from DuraLabel.  Call 1-888-326-9244 and ask about their pipe marking or RTK labeling kits. They'll even put together a special kit for RTK labeling of pipes using large RTK labels.

When using RTK labels for pipe marking the most critical areas to label are those near flanges and valves.  It has also become a common practice to include an RTK label on the back side of valve tags.  However, a valve tag is small and may not always be facing the right way to provide a warning before someone gets too close.  For some pipes you'll want to have larger RTK labels on the pipes near valves, flanges, pumps, filters, test locations, and instrument connections.  This will provide hazard information from a safe distance -- for example, if the valve or flange should be leaking.

RTK labels may also be used near wall or floor penetrations, or any place where more detailed information about pipe contents is needed.

If a pipe carries varying concentrations of a substance, then the RTK labels for that pipe should reflect the most hazardous concentration or mixture.

The placement of RTK labels on pipes should also take into consideration the frequency of maintenance and the potential for exposure to the pipe contents.  For example, a test connection from which a sample is drawn three times a day should be marked with an RTK label.

RTK labels not only warn about hazardous materials, they can inform people that the pipe contents are not hazardous.  By using RTK labels on your pipes, and associated equipment, workers will know the specific hazards of the pipe contents and what protective measures are needed.  A better informed employee is a safer employee.

DuraLabel is uniquely able to supply all of your RTK pipe marking needs.  From standard pipe markers, to high visibility extra large RTK labels, DuraLabel has the labeling supplies needed for effective hazard communication.  Call 1-888-326-9244 today for more information about DuraLabel printers and supplies.  You'll be glad you called.
